Construction Plant Fitting Competition

What is Construction Plant Fitting?

Construction Plant Fitting involves the maintenance, service, and repair of heavy construction machinery such as excavators, dumpers, rollers, forklifts, and cranes. Competitors in this skill demonstrate expertise across mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems to ensure these machines operate safely and efficiently. The role requires the ability to diagnose faults, replace or repair components, and follow strict health and safety regulations, all while using technical manuals, diagrams, and diagnostic tools with precision.

This trade is learned through a structured apprenticeship, combining on-the-job experience with dedicated training in areas such as engines, transmissions, electrics, and hydraulics. Qualified Construction Plant Fitters are essential to keeping Ireland’s construction sector moving by reducing downtime, safeguarding workers, and supporting productivity.

Apprenticeships are vital to the motor industry, a source of talent and expertise that will serve businesses in a rapidly changing business environment. For participants, an apprenticeship is a great opportunity to learn highly valued skills whilst gaining on-the-job experience and start them on a rewarding career path.

“In this context, events like Worldskills Ireland are essential as a shop window to communicate with our young people and to inspire them to be a part of the next generation of employees in the automotive sector. Being able to see skills in action via the various competitions and speaking with companies that are ready to recruit will help attendees to make important decisions for the future.

“As an industry, we must do all we can to mitigate the current challenges we’re facing, including skills shortages, climate change, and supply chain issues, and a huge part of that, means looking to the next generation and inspiring them to join the automotive sector, which offers real opportunity and career progression.”
